The Brotherhood of the Misericórdia of Vila Real is an association of faithful people, established through canon law, with its headquarters in Monsenhor Jerónimo do Amaral Square, right in Vila Real’s downtown. Our aim is to practice social solidarity, reflected in the works of mercy, and to perform acts of Catholic devotion, in accordance with our Bylaws.
In the scope of assistance, we carry out our action through the practice of the fourteen spiritual and corporal works of mercy, through the diverse services we provide, especially in the fields of social support, healthcare, education and culture.
The Misericórdia of Vila Real, with a long and rich history dating back to the early sixteenth century, has played over the years a social function worthy of the highest distinction, and holds a tangible and intangible heritage that turns it into a paradigmatic example in the context of Trás-os-Montes.
Here, we present a five centuries-old history of a material, spiritual and human heritage, hoping that we will be able to carry on our mission of helping those in need, during the next few centuries, continuing to build a better and more fraternal world.
